The Amazing Layla
Layla has been an inspiration to everyone that has come into contact with her. The vet staff has treated her like their own and the tripawd community has been providing ample support. She should not be here today, each day is a miracle. Late September Layla was hit by a car and her front right leg was badly broken. They set and cast her leg and said she would be ok. A week later we took her to get her cast off and they told us gangrene had eaten her leg and most of it was dead. The vet did an emergency amputation and sent us on our way. We had her for a weekend and by Monday we had noticed that the gangrene was still around and had eaten holes in many spots, one so large you could see her insides. Again another emergency surgery to cut away all the dead/gangrene skin. Sadly that day we got a call that it had gone into her chest cavity and there wasn’t much they could do but flush her with antibiotics for a week. We got her at the end of the week and they told us we had to cross our fingers and hope for the best. At her appt the following Monday was going good, until they took her drain tube out. Now they realized all the gangrene was gone! BUT they hole was still there because her scapula was protruding so much, I was then told they need to remove that so that they could have more skin to pull to close the holes. Off she went to another surgery! She recovered well and now she gets her stitches out next friday and we are done with the vet! This has been a trying process! BUT we have made it to the light at the end of the tunnel. Our journey has just began, learning how to handle a 3 legged dog will be another story..but she is a trooper and we are so blessed that she is still here!
